Homework System for PHYS 201
- Homework problems for PHYS 201 will be submitted weekly through the online homework system Mastering Physics.
- Homework problem becomes available every Monday at noon and are due Tuesday in two weeks at noon, unless announced otherwise.
- Maximum score for each homework is 30 points. The score will also be shown in percentages.
- Each homework assignment contains 3 problems for credit and several additional problems for practice. Practice problems are there for your convenience if you need additional exercises to improve your understanding of the material and solve homework problems for credit.
Warning 1: Most problems in homework assignments have randomizers: each student will have different values assigned to variables and answers for each student will be different.
Warning 2: We have chosen Mastering Physics since it is the most advanced, user friendly online homework system with servers that are practically always running.
Warning 3: Homework problems come with variety of hints and feedback for incorrect answers and should be done independently. Recitation TAs are not supposed to help with your PHYS 201 online homework and do not have access to it.
Late homework: You will lose 25% per day for every day that your homework is late, meaning that if you are four or more days late you will receive no credit for that homework assignment.
Grading settings for online homework assignments:
- The number of attempts to answer problems is unlimited.
- You will gain credit for correctly answering a question in a Hint or not opening a
Hint; Bonus per Hint not opened is 2% .
- You will lose credit for incorrectly answering a multiple-choice or true/false question.
How to enroll in the Mastering Physics online homework system?
Special Drexel textbook package from Young and Freedman contains an access code that will let you enroll in the Mastering Physics.
Go to http://www.masteringphysics.com/site and choose the option to register as a new student. Choose the following course id.

What is inside the course?
Once you register for the course you will be taken to the course homepage.
If you click on the Assignment List in the menu on the left hand side, you will be taken to the list of assignments that will be assigned during this course.
However, during the first week, only Introduction to Mastering Physics and Homework 1 will be available.
By clicking on either Introduction to Mastering Physics or Homework 1 you will be taken to the content of the chosen assignment.
Other options in the left hand side menu: Current Assignment, Current Item, Previous Item and Next Item are for easy navigation through the current homework assignment.
eBook menu option will take you to the online textbook ÒUniversity PhysicsÓ from Young and Freedman.
Study Area menu option contains interactive learning physics problems with a number of applets, videos and questions that will help you understand and reinforce physics concepts taught in the class.
We urge you to first go through Introduction to Mastering Physics homework (if you havenÕt done it before) since it will teach you important features of the Mastering Physics online homework system and you will acquire necessary skills to be used for the rest of
the quarter. This assignment is for practice only, but we believe that it will be very beneficial for having pleasant experience with Mastering Physics.
What is inside the homework and how much time can I spend
on it?
When you view assignment you will see that the first three problems carry 10 points credit each, while the rest of the problems are for practice. You are required to work on the first three problems only. You can attempt solving problems in any order you wish, spend any amount of time you wish on them, have as many interruptions and breaks as you need. You only need to make sure to click on the submit button once you are done with the problem.
How long will assignments be available for viewing and
practicing?
Once the assignment becomes available, its status will stay unchanged until the end of the quarter. Once past the due date, you can not get any credit for solving problems but you can attempt and redo them as many times as you wish for practice.
Why are we having to deal with
online homework instead of submitting it on paper?
Although online homework approach may be frustrating in the beginning until you get used to it, we are confident that it provides an excellent interactive learning environment that will improve your critical thinking skills and your performance on the exam and in the course overall.
